It’s October. I know you’re shocked. October is my favorite month. My birthday is in October and the best day ever….. Halloween! I’ve decided to write about a few of my favorite horror films. I am a horror buff. I love being scared. It’s strange though I always want to fast forward through the suspense and if I’m watching a film by myself I usually do. I always have high hope for new horror films. I think it’s because who ever edits the trailers does a really good job. The movies usually end up being awful. I saw Paranormal Activity last year for my birthday and seriously what was the big deal? The end was creepy but honestly I slept like a baby after, although that giant margarita may have helped. Don’t worry I wont spoil anything just give a basic plot and why I liked it. Check them out I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
I’ll start with Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween 1 and 2. Both AMAZING! It’s the same basic story as the one with Jamie Lee Curtis but there’s an actual back story for why Michael Myers is the way he is. It goes all the way back to his childhood. The kid that plays young Michael Myers is hella creepy too. The cinematography is beautiful and the music is fantastic. Be warned it is definitely gory, but it’s not excessive it’s all necessary. That’s something I like horror when there’s not gore just for gores sake. In the second one the use of the Moody Blues “Nights in White Satin” is so spooky and wonderful. It re introduced me them and made me love them even more. I don’t think I jumped many times while watching either Halloween 1 or 2 but I was definitely wigged out and had issues sleeping.
Ahhhhh The Bad Seed. Ask my mother about this one. I don’t recall how I saw this movie I think it might have been on PBS and I just happened to catch one day when I was about 11 or 12. I loved this movie I still do. Rhoda Penmark was so cool. She was pure evil and didn’t look it. This movie is based off of a book and the book has a way better ending. But as I said No Spoilers! This film is about the idea of is being a psychopath genetic. Rhoda Penmark is the perfect blond angelic daughter with a slight problem of murdering people when she doesn’t get her way. Patty McCormick’s performance in this film is amazing. She should have won an Oscar. I highly recommend this film as well as the book.
Back to Rob Zombie. The Devils Rejects is not so much a horror. It’s really more of a western style film but super gory. I was not a fan of House of a 1000 Corpses. I thought it was stupid and gore for gores sake. You do not need to watch House of a 1000 Corpses to love this film. Again the music is phenomenal the Allman Brothers and best use of “Free Bird” in a movie ever…. I own the soundtrack and love it. Back to the film. This film is super bloody and these three people are so effing evil you want justice to be served! The firefly family has killed a bunch of people. They made the mistake of killing the Sheriffs brother. He’s out for blood. They are the run and usually I would say wackiness ensues but that’s a little to pleasant for the Firefly family. Check it out. Trust me you will get supremely disturbed but wont be able to look away.
I know I know David Caruso. How on earth could this movie be awesome? Well it’s more than awesome it’s bad ass creepy! Don’t worry there are no sunglasses in this film. This film is like The Shining but in an abandoned insane asylum. It was shot at Danvers Sanitarium out on the east coast. Danvers was the largest asylum in the United States. It’s where the frontal lobotomy was perfected. This building is hauntingly beautiful. I watched the commentary on this film. The director said that there was really no set design. They went in and shot exactly how the place had been left for years. There’s still drawings in patients rooms, graffiti in the gym, and medical equipment that’s just been left decaying. The atmosphere of Session 9 is so intense. You will be fascinated. You will want to know more. The story is a little weak just because there’s a lot that could’ve been done to take it further. But again that atmosphere makes up for it. Sadly Danvers like more old insane asylums is mostly gone. It was torn down a few years ago. The Kirkbridge (I think that’s what it’s called) which is the front building was turned into condo’s. Which seriously people have we learned nothing from horror films? Indian burial grounds and old insane asylums YOU DON’T LIVE IN! Apparently the people living in the old Danvers building have been experiencing all kinds of weirdness. I’m really not surprised.
Okay Abbott and Costello not scary but a definite fun time. I recommend Meet Dracula or Meet Frankenstein. I had to throw in a little something light and fluffy couldn’t be blamed for nightmares!
